Central to the estate is the classically constructed Belmont House, built in the 1750’s by William Turner, a local merchant, who was engaged to the poet Hannah More but who left her at the altar no less than three times.
In the 1830’s, the house was sold to the Gibbs family who had amassed a huge fortune from the trading of guano, a natural fertilizer found in bird droppings. The Gibbs more famous house was the adjoining Tyntesfield House, now open to the public and owned by the National Trust. The house, neglected for decades, has now been sympathetically restored to its former glory and is used as a private home.
Belmont Estate is a wonderful example of mid 18thC estate, beautifully maintained but perfectly suited to the diverse leisure and outdoor activities of the 21st century.
